This French Onion Soup Open-Faced Burger tastes amazing with the perfect mix of French Onion Soup mixed with a juicy Cheeseburger!

With summer coming, it’s time to get out of the weekend sweat pants and into some summer digs. 🙂

French Onion Soup Burger | Inspiration Kitchen-6646And with good weather usually comes lighter fare. So before we get to the light, healthy recipes, I want to bring you a few that, er, um, aren’t so healthy.

French Onion Soup Open-Faced Burger - inspirationkitchen.comBut they’re tasty. Really, really, reallllly good. The get-a-fork-and-knife kind of good.

So, keep your eatin’ pants on just a bit longer, because you totally owe it to yourself to try these.  🙂

These burgers are juicy and packed with flavor.  Even better, they are super simple to make.

They’re like French Onion Soup in a burger.  Served on top of toasted, buttered Artisan Onion Bread, then topped with caramelized onions, lots of Gruyere cheese and finished under the broiler until the cheese is all melted soft, dripping and bubbly.

Are you hungry yet?

Now…, serve it with Au Jus for dipping.  (p.s. be sure to use a good Au Jus because it takes these burgers over the top in flavor!).

Here are a few tips to make these burgers extra good:

  1. Do not use buns.  Use thick-sliced, toasted and buttered Artisan Onion Bread or Artisan Garlic Bread to keep the bread firm and crisp for dipping in the Au Jus;
  2. Use your favorite Au Jus. One that imparts a great salty flavor. Our favorite is Johnny’s;
  3. Load the burger with LOTS and lots of caramelized onion;
  4. And, if you want it extra special 🙂 eat it like we do and top the burger with fire roasted green chiles

These burgers were sssooo good!  They will melt in your mouth when dipped in the flavorful, beefy Au Jus.

French Onion Soup Open-Faced Burger

A mouth-watering French Onion Soup open-faced burger with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and green chile served with piping hot Au Jus dipping sauce.
Course: Main
Servings: 4
Author: Kristi

Ingredients

Hamburger

  • 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • 1 package Lipton onion soup mix
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • Gruyere cheese grated
  • *4 Fire Roasted Green Chiles optional

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 yellow onion sliced
  • 1 red onion sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Toast

  • 4 slices of Artisan Roasted Onion or Roasted Garlic Bread sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted

Au Jus

  • Au Jus mixed per package instructions

Instructions

Au Jus

  • Mix Au Jus per package instructions and heat until hot. Turn down to low and keep warm until ready to serve.

Caramelized Onions

  • Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter to a skillet and heat on medium-high heat until melted. Add onions and cook until translucent, soft and caramelized.

Bread & Burger

  • Toast sliced bread and set aside. Brush one side of the toast with melted butter and set butter side down in a cast iron skillet. Brush the other side of the toast with melted butter as well.
  • Mix hamburger and Lipton soup mix together. Form into four hamburger patties. Sprinkle with a scant amount of salt and pepper.
  • Grill hamburgers on each side until done. Let rest 5 minutes.
  • Place each hamburger on a slice of toasted bread in the cast iron skillet. Top each with a whole green chile (if desired), then caramelized onions and top with Gruyere cheese. Place under broiler until cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
  • Remove from oven and serve with Au Jus while hot.

Notes

The fire-roasted green chile is optional. If you use the chile, you don't need to heat it. Just slice the chili open, place the chile on the burger, then top with the caramelized onions, and the Gruyere cheese before broiling to melt the cheese.

    OMG – you’re so hilarious every time you start talking about your eatin’ pants – looooove it! And these burgers are 100% insane! So much ooey-gooey-scrumptiousness! Anything that starts with caramelized onions is pretty much gonna be pure poetry … add some fire-roasted green chiles (brilliant!) … and end the whole concoction with the word “burger” … this has gotta be pure eatin’ pants bliss (gotta go dig mine out, I guess)!
