Kitchen Disaster – Crispy Bits – How Not To Make Baked Sea Salt Tortilla Strips

August 12, 2017 by Kristi 2 Comments

This Kitchen Disaster – Crispy Bits – How Not To Make Baked Sea Salt Tortilla Strips post has absolutely NO place in the kitchen. But, I can’t help but poke fun at myself when things go horribly wrong. What can I say? We all make mistakes sometimes! Even Food Bloggers.

Saturday, last week, this happened. I don’t even have a good excuse, except to say that too many distractions in the kitchen, can make a recipe go horribly wrong.

I love to make all the food I can, and avoid processed food. It gives me complete control over the end result and satisfies my control freak nature. 🙂 This is not a good example.

Unfortunately sometimes things don’t work out as planned. What can I say, blogging AND cooking DO go hand-in-hand together. But, do you know when that breaks down? When you’re trying to do BOTH of them at the exact same time, and not keeping an eye on your oven. Whoopsie!

But, I’ve told you before, disaster posts are one of my *very* FAVORITE posts to write! How many of us can say we’ve ˆneverˆ had a disaster in the kitchen? I know I can’t. But don’t worry guys! I have been looking online for the perfect tortilla chip recipes and I think I have found a few that I could actually follow. As well as the chips, I looked into something like Mission Tortillas recipes and I absolutely fell in love with what I saw. Even if my attempt of it is not perfect, at least I can say I tried. That’s all that matters.

It’s so freeing to not try to be perfect all the time! 🙂

Anyhoo – these Crispy Baked Sea Salt Tortilla Strips were intended to be a super fast, easy, crunchable treat for an emergency snack attack. I was in a food crisis. Ever had one of those? Yeah. Me too. 🙂 Just don’t leave the kitchen while baking them, mmmmm ‘k?

Ok, now I’m going to say a whole bunch of stuff that sounds like I’m full of hooey. But, go with me on this, because I’ve made them a million times, and they’ve been fantastic. Yes, the recipe is coming soon. Clearly not today, but soon.

Unscorched. Delicious. I know it’s hard to believe me right now. But, let’s go with this AS IF things went as planned. Read on. You’ll have to use your imagination, so dig deep.

These Crispy Baked Sea Salt Tortilla Strips are so easy to make at home, and so much better than you find in any restaurant. They’re fantastic for topping a soup, salad or just for munching. Now, thats my kind of food!

I’m sure you’ve had these before, especially if you’ve had Tortilla Soup at your local Mexican restaurant. These are the little babies that adorn the top. Of course, they don’t look like above burnt Crispy Bits! (And the real recipe won’t either!)

Let me tell you how you use them (well, not these, but you know that I mean). It’s a great way to use up any leftover corn tortilla shells you have lingering from Taco night. And, although this recipe calls for only three ingredients, you can certainly add any seasonings that you adore. I needed simple, so I went with corn tortillas, olive oil and sea salt (and too much sea salt at that – yeesh!). 10 minutes later in the oven, and Crispy Baked Sea Salt Tortilla Strips were ready to snack on! p.s. Do *not* do this – this post is making fun at myself. The cooking time was WAY off, because I was distracted.

Shaking Head & Face Palm!!!

p.s.s. I’m not gonna lie. We ate some of these. As it turns out, we like Crispy Bits! But, I’m still not giving you the recipe, because this is just wrong. 🙂

I do this kind of stuff ALL the time and I have to laugh at myself. My latest was the other day I was making up a batter that said mix for two minutes. Fine. Glance over at stove to check the time. 325. Mix mix mix for what seems long enough and glance back and it’s still 325. Assume I’m just being impatient as usual and mix more. Glance back again (325) and realize I’m looking at the oven temp, not the clock. Duh!
