Welcome to our all time favorite breakfast treat. Lox, Bagels & Cream Cheese with Fresh Basil.
We’ve been serving this during special occasions and holidays in my family for years. On occasional weekend mornings, the Husband’s family would gather around the table at the beach house, and we’d lay out a breakfast spread that was not only beautiful to look at, but tasted incredible. Being from the Pacific Northwest, it seems only natural that salmon would make an appearance. 🙂
For the base, you need a good bagel. And, in my humble opinion, there truly is only one kind of bagel. The EVERYTHING bagel. See? It’s right there in the name. e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.
What you’ll love about using the everything bagel is, the sprinkling of the sesame seeds, poppy seeds and onion bring their own flavor profile that only enhances this incredible dish.
The key to keeping this sandwich soft inside, with a light, crunchy outside is to toast them just enough to be crispy, yet leaving them with a soft, supple, bready center. They should look just like this – a perfect dusting of toasting, ready for the cream cheese of your choice.
Our favorite cream cheese of choice for this recipe is Philadelphia Cream Cheese with Chives, but it would be equally decadent with the Garden Vegetable or Jalapeno variety. For you risk takers out there – for an extra burst of salmon, they even have Salmon Cream Cheese!
What you will love about this recipe is, it’s easy to make, tastes like it comes from a 5 star restaurant and looks elegant on your table.
This would make a fantastic brunch or breakfast to serve your guests or adorn your holiday table.
What really makes this stand out, is the addition of fresh basil. Fresh basil adds incredible depth of flavor on it’s own and a surprising, welcome crispy crunch.
Who doesn’t love fresh basil? Can I get an amen to the basil?
Here’s a little tip when you’re preparing this breakfast sandwich. Layer it this way, starting from the bottom up: bagel, cream cheese, basil, lox (thinly sliced smoked salmon), red onion and top with with a generous amount of capers. Top with additional basil (julienne-style), if desired. By layering it this way, the moistness of the salmon and the boundaries of the onions will keep the capers in place! You don’t want them falling off and rolling around the table. =not cool 🙂
The other thing you can do, if you’re not all hung-up on presentation – you can always put the capers directly on top of the cream cheese. That will, for certain, make sure they don’t fall off.

- 2 everything bagels split
- 6 ounces lox thinly sliced smoked salmon
- 4 to 8 ounces cream cheese with chives
- 4 slices red onion thinly sliced
- Bunch basil
- 4 to 6 tablespoons capers
- 4 slices red onion thinly sliced
- Layer it this way, starting from the bottom up: bagel, cream cheese, basil, smoked salmon (lox), red onion and top with with a generous amount of capers. Top with additional basil (julienne-style), if desired.
