French Onion Soup Open-Faced Burger
A mouth-watering French Onion Soup open-faced burger with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and green chile served with piping hot Au Jus dipping sauce.

Ingredients
Hamburger
- 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
- 1 package Lipton onion soup mix
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- Gruyere cheese grated
- *4 Fire Roasted Green Chiles optional
Caramelized Onions
- 1 yellow onion sliced
- 1 red onion sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
Toast
- 4 slices of Artisan Roasted Onion or Roasted Garlic Bread sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter melted
Au Jus
- Au Jus mixed per package instructions
Instructions
Au Jus
- Mix Au Jus per package instructions and heat until hot. Turn down to low and keep warm until ready to serve.
Caramelized Onions
- Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter to a skillet and heat on medium-high heat until melted. Add onions and cook until translucent, soft and caramelized.
Bread & Burger
- Toast sliced bread and set aside. Brush one side of the toast with melted butter and set butter side down in a cast iron skillet. Brush the other side of the toast with melted butter as well.
- Mix hamburger and Lipton soup mix together. Form into four hamburger patties. Sprinkle with a scant amount of salt and pepper.
- Grill hamburgers on each side until done. Let rest 5 minutes.
- Place each hamburger on a slice of toasted bread in the cast iron skillet. Top each with a whole green chile (if desired), then caramelized onions and top with Gruyere cheese. Place under broiler until cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
- Remove from oven and serve with Au Jus while hot.
Notes
The fire-roasted green chile is optional. If you use the chile, you don't need to heat it. Just slice the chili open, place the chile on the burger, then top with the caramelized onions, and the Gruyere cheese before broiling to melt the cheese.
